KNOTTY BY NATURE FIBRE ARTS

About 9 years ago a family member of mine was given a pair of socks that a great-aunt had knit while she was blind. When I met her, at the old folks home, I was inspired to give it a try. It could not be too hard, if it can be done whilst blind. Not surprising, I started with a pair of socks. The first sock was very tightly knit, and the ribbing on the sock cuff turned out as a garter stitch, but I managed to knit a pair of socks with some initial help from my mom. From there, my love and obsession of wool grew, into weaving and spinning. During this time, I met Ryan and I have since introduced him to the endless world of fibre. Before that I would stash away my wool, after visits to the lys, buying wool that I didnt really need but loved. But with two fibre lovers in the house, wool seemed to reproduce on its own. I toyed with the idea of having a fibre arts store but found ut too daunting on my own. The 2008 Saltspring Island Fibre Fest was Ryans inspiration to open the store with me. From that point on, it was akin to having a second job, we worked many nights and weekends developing a business plan, getting a grant and countless bank loan applications. The loan was the most difficult part and in the end family helped us out along with the community support loan program from Coast Capital.

We opened in November of 2009 and have since been blessed with meeting many talented artists who in turn have been providing consignment items and class instruction. Our goal is for the store to be a welcoming place, for novices to experts to explore the fibre arts. We have a nice comfy couch to sit and visit on, and we offer unique services such as a "knitting needle exchange," a community bulletin board, and on-site drum carding. We sell local fibres, and yarns, handspun wool and other fibre ready-made products.
